Institute Presentation

The Division of Clinical Neurochemistry was established jointly under the Institute of Clinical Chemistry & Laboratory Medicine and the Department of Medicine following recruitment in August 2007 of Prof. Eisenhofer from the NIH (Bethesda, MD, USA). Extensive experience in development and transfer of diagnostic assay technologies from the research to the routine laboratory environment provides an ideal situation for the Division within the Institute of Clinical Chemistry. Since adrenal-related disorders and endocrine tumours represent major areas of research carried out within the Department of Medicine, the Division is also provided with appropriate infrastructural support for cross-disciplinary patient-oriented and translational research that takes advantage of referrals of endocrine tumour patients and the relevant expertise of basic investigators working with transgenic animal and chromaffin cell model systems. A central role in numerous international multicentre studies involving measurements of biomarkers for diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring further facilitates access to patient material and data. The technical expertise of the Division, which currently centres on small molecule analytics using HPLC colourmetric methodology, will be considerably enhanced by acquisition in 2010 of a tandem mass spectrometric triple quadruple ion-trap instrument capable of both targeted quantitative analyses and metabolomic profiling. In addition to identification and measurements of novel tumour biomarkers, this instrument will be used for dual-isotope dilution metabolic pathway flux analyses for a systems biology approach to improved understanding of tumourigenic mechanisms. Further recent funding support also now allows recruitment of several new staff members to facilitate the above new initiatives.

Prof. Graeme Eisenhofer is on the editorial board and an associate editor of Pharmacology & Therapeutics and of the International Journal of Endocrinology.

The Technical University of Dresden occupies a collaborative position in the consortium and participates in WP1, WP2, WP3, WP4, WP5, WP6 and WP7.

Main tasks:

  • Development of tumour biomarkers for diagnosis, therapeutic monitoring and as predictive indicators of malignancy and underlying mutations;
  • Metabolomic and fluxomic profiling of tumour energy pathways.
